In July, a Miami-based judge ruled that the president would have to start handing over detailed financial records to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/bbc\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">BBC<\/a> by 6 August. On Wednesday, Trump\u2019s attorneys tried to argue that a $10bn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2026\/aug\/05\/trump-defamation-lawsuit-murdoch-dismissal\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">defamation suit<\/a> brought against the Wall Street Journal should go to a trial after it reported on a \u201cbawdy\u201d letter the president reportedly included in a birthday book for the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein in 2003. Trump\u2019s justice department also issued and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2026\/jul\/23\/new-york-times-reporter-subpoenas-withdraw\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">recalled<\/a> subpoenas to New York Times journalists after the paper reported on security concerns with the Air Force One presidential jet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Trump\u2019s initial lawsuit concerns a scene in the BBC documentary, entitled Trump, A Second Chance, that spliced lines from a speech the president made on 6 January 2021. The clip made it appear like Trump directly urged his supporters to attack the US Capitol.
