dcr-ogvvui\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reportedly expanded the scope of the largest known <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/cyclosporiasis-outbreak--us-\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">cyclosporiasis outbreak<\/a> to more states, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/arkansas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Arkansas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/missouri\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Missouri<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">A spokesperson from Arkansas\u2019s health department confirmed the outbreak expansion to their state in a statement to the Guardian: \u201cArkansas is one of the states the CDC is adding to the multi-state outbreak for cyclosporiasis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The Missouri health department also confirmed the state\u2019s \u201cinvolvement in this multistate outbreak\u201d, a spokesperson told the Guardian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The alleged expansion also includes Iowa, Nebraska, New Hampshire and North Carolina, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/08\/04\/cdc-expands-largest-known-cyclospora-outbreak-15-states\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to<\/a> the New Hampshire and North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">As of 28 July, the CDC had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/php\/surveillance\/index.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">recorded<\/a> 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, along with approximately 11,500 suspected cases awaiting confirmation. Cases have been reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/list-of-states-where-cyclospora-cases-are-still-rising-12276669\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">45 states<\/a> since May, although most of the suspected cases have been concentrated in Michigan and Ohio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The disease is a form of food poisoning originating from <em>Cyclospora cayetanensis<\/em>, a microscopic parasite that causes symptoms including diarrhea, appetite loss, bloating, extreme fatigue, low-grade fever, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Cyclosporiasis spreads through the fecal-oral route, most commonly by consuming contaminated food or water. Symptoms typically begin about a week after infection, and without treatment can last anywhere from a few days to a month or longer, according to the CDC. In response, Taylor Farms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jul\/18\/cyclospora-iceberg-lettuce-recall\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">voluntarily recalled<\/a> lettuce distributed to restaurants in 27 states and grocery stores in 15 states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">On 24 July, the CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2026\/cyclospora-outbreak-linked-to-iceberg-lettuce-expanded-to-four-new-states.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">announced<\/a> that the outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce had expanded to four additional states \u2013 Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.
