The race for the Democratic nomination for<\/strong> Senate<\/strong> in Michigan<\/strong> remains too close <\/a>to call early on Wednesday with Abdul El-Sayed<\/strong>, a progressive former public health official, holding a narrow lead over congresswoman Haley Stevens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At around 5am local time<\/a>, El-Sayed had 49.5% of the vote and Stevens 45.78%, with more than 95% of votes counted.<\/p>\n

Both addressed supporters, saying the vote count could continue well into the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe knew that this was going to be a close race, and that\u2019s exactly what we\u2019ve got,\u201d Stevens said. \u201cI am feeling fired up, and you should be too.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bitter and expensive campaign attracted national attention not just because the general election for the seat will help decide which party controls the Senate. It also became the most notable proxy battle between the Democratic Party\u2019s establishment and progressive wings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Candidates from the left-flank \u2013 including democratic socialists<\/strong> \u2013 have found surprising success in the party\u2019s US House primaries, including in New York<\/strong> and Denver<\/strong>, in areas that tend to veer farther left. A progressive victory in Michigan<\/a> would be significant for the movement.<\/p>\n

The winner of Tuesday\u2019s race will face the Republican<\/strong> nominee, former representative Mike Rogers<\/strong>, in November, to succeed the retiring Democratic senator Gary Peters<\/strong>. Rogers ran unopposed in the Republican primary.<\/p>\n
