It also became the most notable <strong>proxy battle between the Democratic Party\u2019s establishment and progressive wings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Candidates from the left-flank \u2013 including <strong>democratic socialists<\/strong> \u2013 have found surprising success in the party\u2019s US House primaries, including in <strong>New York<\/strong> and <strong>Denver<\/strong>, in areas that tend to veer farther left. A progressive victory in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/michigan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Michigan<\/a> would be significant for the movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The winner of Tuesday\u2019s race will face the <strong>Republican<\/strong> nominee, former representative <strong>Mike Rogers<\/strong>, in November, to succeed the retiring Democratic senator <strong>Gary Peters<\/strong>. She\u2019ll face the Republican candidate and state senator, <strong>John Braun<\/strong>, who is backed by Trump.
