On 27 July, contractors working for Fisher Sand and Gravel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DbY-6HcJbIB\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">crushed three of the largest cottonwoods with excavators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Now the group is defending a towering cottonwood. Estimated to be more than 200 years old, it is the last of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DbmnPN4iBIe\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the huge old trees<\/a> right on the border that some locals call the \u201cgrandmothers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The group has now grown to include several dozen people, with many camping on private land with permission of the owner. The protesters help to support and feed a single rotating person who stays in a platform high in the tree at all times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The demonstration has been peaceful. Trump\u2019s border wall threatens to destroy it<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-oj13vq\">\n<div class=\"dcr-ef9nua\">Read more<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe tree itself has become a symbol,\u201d Meza said, both of the ecological importance of the area and the beauty that remains, but also \u201chow much violence and destruction has happened on the border\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cShe\u2019s our Statue of Liberty,\u201d Scott said of the last remaining tree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The once idyllic valley, where the movie Oklahoma was filmed, is a high-elevation prairie home to bears and porcupines, and the mountains on either side represent two of the most important binational <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/01\/arizona-border-wall-san-rafael-valley\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">wildlife corridors in the borderlands<\/a>. At the beginning of the second Trump administration, the border here was demarcated by hip-high vehicle barriers and barbed wire which animals could easily pass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Now a double layer of wall is planned for all of it and construction began last year. These people are \u201cshining a light\u201d on the devastation and destruction caused by border wall construction, she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The tree is in the path of a planned secondary wall being built about 60ft north of the border, along which another wall is also under construction nearby. A total of 384 miles of these secondary barriers are in development, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/border-security\/along-us-borders\/smart-wall-map\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according<\/a> to CBP. Neither the DHS, CBP or Fisher replied to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Meza emphasized that while one border wall is destructive enough, a second one is even more so, besides being unnecessary due to negligible levels of border crossings in the area, and it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jul\/24\/arizona-border-wall-endangered-species\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">threatens many other natural areas, including a desert oasis<\/a> in south-west Arizona called Quitobaquito Springs. About 90% of riparian forests in the state have disappeared due to groundwater extraction or diversion, development and mining.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">This area is the headwaters of the Santa Cruz River, which begins in this valley, before flowing into Mexico, taking a turn, and heading west and north back into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/arizona\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Arizona<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cPlaces like Lochiel with this cottonwood forest, where this ribbon of green runs dozens of miles from Mexico to the US, these are the last threads of an ecosystem that has declined so much already,\u201d McSpadden said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Meza sent several letters to the CBP asking if the agency and their contractors could avoid felling the trees, rather than destroying them. The agency promised in <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Tns1U4bZndZQ1LbNNJVy-cdkVbLBrhyY\/view\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a letter dated 18 June<\/a> to not cut down the cottonwoods if any birds were nesting in them.
