Low water levels had already forced Romania to close two nuclear reactors.<\/p>\n<p>A nuclear power plant in Bulgaria has so far <a href=\"https:\/\/bnrnews.bg\/en\/post\/510696\/kozloduy-npp-continues-to-operate-despite-low-level-of-the-danube\" target=\"_blank\"><u>not reduced its capacity<\/u><\/a>, despite low water levels in the Danube. However, last week, a cruise ship in Bulgaria was forced to evacuate almost 200 tourists after it went aground near the port city of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/danube-river-record-lows-tourism-industry-drought-05103b433efb46990d9664ba4d155834\" target=\"_blank\">Vidin<\/a>, according to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>The Danube&#8217;s retreat has also exposed World War II relics. On Monday, the flames had jumped containment lines  to stop the fire from spreading. <\/p>\n<p>Greek state media outlet ERT News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ertnews.gr\/eidiseis\/veltiomeni-i-eikona-apo-ti-megali-pyrkagia-sti-dytiki-attiki-synexeis-oi-prospatheies-gia-tin-pliri-oriothetisi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>reported<\/u><\/a> on Tuesday morning that over 500 firefighters were tackling the blaze, including multiple helicopters. Fire department deputy spokesman Yiannis Artopios told the outlet that conditions were constantly changing, making the flames difficult to tackle.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, two helicopters tackling the Western Attica fire collided in midair, killing two crew members. Last week, two firefighters died fighting a fire on Crete, while a third was killed on the Peloponnesea region in southern Greece according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/civilprotection.gov.gr\/en\/deltia-tupou\/anadimosieysi-anakoinosis-pyrosbestikoy-somatos-ektakti-enimerosi-gia-tis-pyrkagies-apo-ton\" target=\"_blank\">Greek fire service.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"MID-STORY-RECOMMENDATIONS-MOUNT-PIANO\" CLASS=\"MID-STORY-RECOMMENDATIONS-MOUNT-PIANO\" ARIA-LABEL=\"RECOMMENDED STORIES\" --><\/p>\n<p>In France, many of the major wildfires which raged last week are now under control, though <a href=\"https:\/\/incendieencours.fr\/en\" target=\"_blank\"><u>maps showed<\/u><\/a> some active fires in the southeast on Tuesday. Over the weekend most of the population of the southwestern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/07\/31\/nx-s1-5913353\/france-wildfires-bordeaux-europe-heatwave\" target=\"_blank\">Gironde <\/a>region, near Bordeaux, were allowed to return home.<\/p>\n<p>However, the fire has led to some unexpected discoveries: what are thought to be unexploded munitions from World War II. In a heat wave bulletin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salute.gov.it\/new\/it\/tema\/ondate-di-calore\/bollettini-sulle-ondate-di-calore-0\" target=\"_blank\"><u>published<\/u><\/a> on Tuesday, the Italian Health Ministry said that 25 of the country&#8217;s 27 major cities are on &#8220;red alert.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ministry said all Italian cities would be elevated to red alert by Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the United Kingdom&#8217;s Health Security Agency (UKHSA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/ukhsa-updates-heat-health-alerts-across-england\" target=\"_blank\"><u>issued<\/u><\/a> heat health alerts for eight regions of England for the first half of the week, warning that rising temperatures may increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n<p>Record heat continues to be recorded across the continent.
