They also include goods previously protected from import taxes under the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2026\/07\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-imposes-additional-tariffs-on-canada\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">new tariffs<\/a> will exclude energy products, fish, critical minerals and potash. Several Democratic lawmakers last year proposed repealing the section because they said Trump could use it to destabilize the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">A White House fact sheet claims Trump is \u201ctaking action to hold Canada accountable for its continued discrimination against and unreasonable and unequal treatment of U.S. commerce that has burdened and disadvantaged hardworking Americans\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Trump claims in the proclamations that Canada discriminates against American automobiles, alcohol and cheese relative to other nations, but his argument rests in large part on retaliatory actions taken by Canada after the US president imposed tariffs on Canada under the pretext that it should do more to stop fentanyl smuggling into the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Trump noted in his autos proclamation that Canada maintained, starting in April 2025, a 25% tariff on the imports of US motor vehicles that did not qualify for preferential treatment under the USMCA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The White House also cited all but two Canadian provinces and territories stopping the sale of US alcoholic beverages, while not imposing similar restrictions on other countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Trump also objected to Canada\u2019s treatment of US cheese, saying in his proclamation that Canada discriminates against the US compared to Europe on dairy products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Trump had threatened last week to impose tariffs due to smoke from devastating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/canada-wildfires\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">wildfires<\/a> in Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jul\/18\/air-quality-warnings-canada-wildfires\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">drifting<\/a> across large portions of the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWe are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116936952365066409\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">wrote<\/a> on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/jul\/19\/donald-trump-world-cup-final\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">watched<\/a> Sunday\u2019s World Cup final with Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister who has previously pushed back on the US president and won the premiership last year on a platform of promising to stand up for Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">After the match, Trump told reporters he had raised the issue of wildfire smoke with Carney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI told him, I mean, \u2018You got to stop these fires from coming in and, you know, poisoning our air.
