to unhealthy and even hazardous <a href=\"https:\/\/gispub.epa.gov\/airnow\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>air quality in a number of states<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of extreme heat and dry conditions in Ontario and northern Minnesota led to significant spread of <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/ontario-wildfire-smoke-moves-east\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>wildfires on July 13<\/u><\/a>. More than 800 wildfires are actively burning in Canada, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/cwfis.cfs.nrcan.gc.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Canadian Wildland Fire Information System<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Record breaking temperatures created a heat dome across western Ontario and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/minnesota-wildfires-live-updates\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Minnesota<\/u><\/a> with some places reaching over 100 degrees. This allowed fires to continue on an &#8220;unprecedented run,&#8221; said Derek Mallia, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Utah.<\/p>\n<p>In Ontario, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/solmamakwa\/status\/2077164640790892548\" target=\"_blank\"><u>dramatic videos on social media<\/u><\/a> show intense fire and smoke-filled skies. The air quality in certain areas was labeled &#8220;very high risk&#8221; by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airqualityontario.com\/aqhi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Air Quality Ontario<\/u><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/solmamakwakii\/posts\/pfbid02G9jv9u6828KEEcNMFp3BFkme13ime8VyYEefcMPGMyjNpv6fx2GbetfLXfaYH8ufl?rdid=ZZxTDqmfwfLLmWCQ#\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Thousands of people<\/u><\/a> in the region have been forced to evacuate.<\/p>\n<p>Air quality ranging from hazardous to unhealthy is also affecting parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, choking major northeastern cities like Philadelphia, New York City and Baltimore, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gispub.epa.gov\/airnow\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>AirNow<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have a firehose of smoke coming right now,&#8221; Mallia said.<\/p>\n<p>Those areas are expected to experience smoke-filled skies at least through the weekend.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/07\/15\/nx-s1-5887628\/how-the-federal-government-is-responding-to-the-worsening-western-fire-season\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Climate change<\/u><\/a> caused by humans is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/01\/10\/nx-s1-5253063\/a-new-study-explores-the-role-of-climate-change-in-worsening-fires\" target=\"_blank\"><u>exacerbating these conditions<\/u><\/a>. That does a number on our health<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- END CLASS=\"BUCKETBLOCK\" -->\n      <\/div>\n<p><!-- END CLASS=\"BUCKET IMG\" -->\n   <\/div>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RESNX-S1-5894857-100\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The frequency and intensity of these wildfire smoke events are increasing,&#8221; said Dan Westervelt, an associate research professor at Columbia University&#8217;s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. He added that the fires are becoming an annual occurrence and sometimes more than just annual.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\"><strong>Dangers from wildfire smoke<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/04\/23\/nx-s1-5368131\/air-quality-public-health-ozone\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Smoke is made up of tiny particles<\/u><\/a> that can be inhaled deep into a person&#8217;s lungs and even enter the bloodstream.<\/p>\n<p>The data is very clear that the pollution from wildfires has all kinds of health effects, said Dr. David Eisenman, a professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He points to studies showing an increase in heart attacks, heart failure, stroke and respiratory illness.
