But the defining moment of the 1976 bicentennial, the US\u2019s last epic birthday celebration, came two years before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cMy fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LySpUpI9k1s&amp;t=1s\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Gerald Ford declared<\/a> in his presidential inauguration speech of 9 August 1974. \u201cOur great republic is a government of laws and not of men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Ford\u2019s words, spoken in the immediate aftermath of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/richard-nixon\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Richard Nixon<\/a>\u2019s resignation over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/watergate\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Watergate<\/a>, were intended as balm to a nation already polarised by the trauma of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/vietnam-war\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Vietnam war<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/civil-rights-movement\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">civil rights upheavals<\/a> of the 1960s.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"b2477a14-f0fe-4533-80ba-cbdfebe3ceb3\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-1oq85qr\">\n<div data-print-layout=\"hide\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-3 | 3\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-name=\"placeholder\" class=\"dcr-1rx5ky9\">\n<div data-format-theme=\"5\" data-format-design=\"0\" data-format-display=\"0\" class=\"dcr-15vltj4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ng-interactive\/2026\/jul\/03\/us-at-250-global-reputation\" class=\"dcr-f35c0u\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dcr-vvxpdt\">\n<div class=\"dcr-6z6e7\">\n<div class=\"dcr-zh9rih\">For allies and adversaries alike, America at 250 is a solid global citizen gone rogue<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-oj13vq\">\n<div class=\"dcr-ef9nua\">Read more<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But they also set the tone for a nationwide commemoration of America\u2019s 200th birthday that had been a decade in the making and which, when it arrived, had a badly needed cathartic impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The 1976 bicentennial is popularly remembered for visual events such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gothamcenter.org\/blog\/operationsail-zy4la-6h6h4-tlwga-allfs-5gpbn-p8hkk-gewm2-86weg-453lp-rtg9j-b4nt8-f2n45-2s22f-kmea4-5jtmm-a2l5n-ljflg-bbjh6-82t6p-w9slx-nhf8r-egskg-7mja9-rk27k-bwgya-x8sb6-9ejss-b9tem\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">tall ships parade<\/a> in the New York harbour that featured 16 traditional vessels and 100 modern boats from around the world sailing down the Hudson River.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">It drew state visits from the heads of state of the US\u2019s two longest-standing allies, Queen Elizabeth of Britain and Val\u00e9ry Giscard d\u2019Estaing, the president of France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehousehistory.org\/gerald-r-fords-bicentennial-adventure#:~:text=For%20the%20United%20States%2C%20the,sunrise%20first%20touched%20American%20soil.\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Ford himself,<\/a> in a 4 July speech, memorably characterised the American Declaration of Independence as \u201cnot a protest against government, but against the excesses of government\u201d. In a coded message to anti-government critics in his own Republican party \u2013 including the future president, Ronald Reagan \u2013 he added that \u201cgovernment is not necessarily evil, but a necessary good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But the 1976 anniversary is chiefly recalled by historians as an event extolling the robustness and endurance of the US political system, which was widely deemed to have functioned in the face of adversity in a manner that feels distant and remote in the era of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe 1976 celebration was a more vital and happy one because of a broad belief that two years earlier the system had worked, and we were celebrating a system that had cleansed itself,\u201d said Jonathan Alter, a historian and biographer of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/jimmy-carter\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> Jimmy Carter<\/a>, who was elected president in 1976 after defeating Ford in that year\u2019s presidential election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWe were in a period of renewal and relief, and today we\u2019re in a period of fear and loathing,\u201d said Alter. \u201cWe don\u2019t have any reason to celebrate our founding documents, because we\u2019re living in an authoritarian state that is quite different from the one that the founders created.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"dcr-lhbwso\">\n<h2 id=\"what-might-have-been\" class=\"dcr-8418j6\">What might have been<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The prevailing mood 50 years ago was perhaps best summed up by the title of a book by the New York newspaper columnist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/19\/business\/media\/jimmy-breslin-dead-ny-columnist-author.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Jimmy Breslin<\/a>, How The Good Guys Finally Won, which described the role of Congress and the courts in bringing Nixon to account.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"181f3d04-4ddb-4783-b41d-6c66ab01882a\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-1oq85qr\">\n<div data-print-layout=\"hide\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-14 | 14\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-name=\"placeholder\" class=\"dcr-1rx5ky9\">\n<div data-format-theme=\"5\" data-format-design=\"0\" data-format-display=\"0\" class=\"dcr-15vltj4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ng-interactive\/2026\/jun\/29\/america-250th-anniversary-trump\" class=\"dcr-f35c0u\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dcr-vvxpdt\">\n<div class=\"dcr-6z6e7\">\n<div class=\"dcr-zh9rih\">Donald Trump hijacked America\u2019s 250 and turned it into a \u2018theatre of the absurd\u2019<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-oj13vq\">\n<div class=\"dcr-ef9nua\">Read more<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Nixon\u2019s departure arguably dictated the tenor of the 1976 celebrations in another way. In an intriguing counterfactual, some historians contend the bicentennial may have ended up resembling the partisan events ordered by Trump to mark the US\u2019s 250th anniversary, had Nixon survived <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/watergate\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Watergate<\/a> and stayed in office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cUndoubtedly, it would have felt very different and been much more like today,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/davidmckeanbooks.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">David McKean<\/a>, a former US ambassador and co-author of a recently published book, The Flag Was Still There, exploring different anniversary periods since 1776. \u201cThere would have been a lot more discord and it would have felt very contentious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Nixon had, in fact, tried to assume control over the bicentennial preparations <strong>\u2013<\/strong> much in the manner Trump has asserted dominion over the 250th, which critics say projects a stilted and highly selective interpretation of US history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Within a week of becoming president in 1969, he ordered a shake-up of the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission \u2013 a bipartisan body established by Congress three years earlier to organise celebrations \u2013 to facilitate the appointment of his allies and supporters to key positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThere is a really easy comparison to be made between how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/richard-nixon\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Richard Nixon<\/a> initially wanted to celebrate the bicentennial, and how Trump wants to now, which is that both administrations micromanaged and tried to exercise tremendous control over a kind of top-down patriotic commemoration,\u201d said MJ Rymsza-Pawlowska, a history professor at the American University in Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But Nixon\u2019s approach eventually triggered a backlash as critics alleged corruption and financial improprieties while complaining of a corporate takeover of the celebration, derided as a \u201cbuycentennial\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Amid widespread criticism even among Republicans, and with Watergate gradually consuming his presidency, the commission was eventually wound up by Congress while Nixon was still in the White House, and replaced with a new body that promised to support small-scale and decentralised events in local communities across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The result was a mass of devolved grassroots celebrations encompassing different groups and contrasting sharply with this year\u2019s Trump-inspired spectacle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWhen I talk to people about how they celebrated the bicentennial, they\u2019ll usually say, well, I went to a local picnic, or I visited a local museum,\u201d said Rymsza-Pawlowska, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/uncpress.org\/9781469633862\/history-comes-alive\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">History Comes Alive<\/a>, a study of US popular culture in the 1970s. \u201cIt was participatory and focused around self-determination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>What we\u2019re seeing right now, at least on the federal level, is nothing like that. It represents an administration that has been compounding power and influence any way it can.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"dcr-lhbwso\">\n<h2 id=\"night-and-day\" class=\"dcr-8418j6\">Night and day<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The loosely governed 1976 bicentennial gave Americans space to \u201cfind their meaning\u201d, enabling them to \u201ccelebrate\u201d as well as \u201creflect\u201d, Rymsza-Pawlowska argued.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"8340025b-ae77-4367-bf04-925670df308d\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-1oq85qr\">\n<div data-print-layout=\"hide\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-28 | 28\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-name=\"placeholder\" class=\"dcr-1rx5ky9\">\n<div data-format-theme=\"5\" data-format-design=\"0\" data-format-display=\"0\" class=\"dcr-15vltj4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jul\/04\/us-independence-day-holidays-past\" class=\"dcr-f35c0u\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dcr-vvxpdt\">\n<div class=\"dcr-6z6e7\">\n<div class=\"dcr-zh9rih\">The US celebrated the end of a \u2018long national nightmare\u2019 as it turned 200. What about now?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-oj13vq\">\n<div class=\"dcr-ef9nua\">Read more<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cAmerican history is complex,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s entirely possible to be critical of some of the shortcomings of the promises of the American Revolution, but still want to celebrate the successes, and I think that\u2019s what people did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">It was amid that pluralistic climate that a dissenting work such as Alex Haley\u2019s Pulitzer prize-winning novel Roots, exploring the author\u2019s family descent from slavery, was published to wide acclaim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The tolerant, harmonious mood seems all the more striking given that it coincided with a darkening economic outlook <strong>\u2013<\/strong> which<strong>,<\/strong> in hindsight, prefigured long-term developments that in future decades would be the catalyst for populist forces ultimately harnessed by Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The long period of prosperity and economic growth following the second world war had sputtered amid a 1973 oil shock that triggered inflation and rising unemployment across the industrialised west.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThere was uncertainty and unhappiness about the economy, as opposed to the political situation, which I think people felt good about,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thompsonhine.com\/professionals\/james-d-robenalt\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">James Robenalt<\/a>, a historian who has written a book on the period with John Dean, Nixon\u2019s former White House counsel, who went to jail for his role in Watergate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThere was inflation, stagnation, stagflation, and this feeling that we were in difficult times, and that we were also in transition economically from a country that had a lot of industry and a vibrant business environment, and farmers and so forth, to being on our way to the rust belt of the midwest, and trade opening up but factories closing,\u201d said Robenalt. \u201cThat was a huge transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Nevertheless, he added, comparing the bicentennial atmosphere with the backdrop to the 250th is \u201clike night and day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt feels very much like people don\u2019t know where we\u2019re going. People feel that there is a bit of a circus atmosphere about the nation,\u201d said Robenalt. \u201cYour political opponents today are really seen as enemies \u2013 back then, political opponents were political opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"dcr-lhbwso\">\n<h2 id=\"weve-seen-it-before\" class=\"dcr-8418j6\">We\u2019ve seen it before<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The closest anniversary parallel, according to McKean, may actually be a full century ago, in 1926, a year when the US marked its 150th birthday and which also saw 15,000 white-robed Ku Klux Klan members march down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House, while a nativism redolent of Trump\u2019s \u201cAmerica first\u201d rhetoric stalked the land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWe had just gone through a major pandemic with the Spanish flu, which had killed millions of people worldwide, not dissimilar from Covid,\u201d said McKean. \u201cThere was also this huge sort of inequality happening in America at the time. Immigration was a big issue, and laws had been passed and signed by [then president] Calvin Coolidge to impose quotas on each country that had had immigrants coming to this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Other anniversaries also witnessed the US passing through dark periods.
