The ruling is a major win for the central bank, which has spent the last year under attack from the White House.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\"><strong>But, in a separate case, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jun\/29\/us-supreme-court-ftc-ruling-slaughter\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">justices ruled that Trump can fire leaders of independent agencies or commissions<\/a>, ending 90 years of court precedent that curbs executive power<\/strong>. That case centered on Rebecca Slaughter, whom Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2025\/12\/trump-v-slaughter-an-explainer\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">fired<\/a> as Federal Trade Commission member in March last year over email, telling her that keeping her as a commissioner would be \u201cinconsistent with [the] administration\u2019s priorities\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\"><strong>The court handed Trump another loss, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jun\/29\/supreme-court-trump-e-jean-carroll\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">refusing to hear his bid to overturn a $5m verdict in favor of E Jean Carroll<\/a><\/strong><strong>in a case in \u2060which a jury found \u2060him liable for sexually \u200babusing the former magazine columnist and then defaming her.<\/strong> The 2023 jury verdict and a $5m civil judgment remain in place. The high court declined to take up the case in a brief, unexplained order. There were no noted dissents.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\"><strong>The supreme court sided against national Republicans and the Trump administration to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jun\/29\/supreme-court-mail-in-ballots-election-ruling\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">allow mail-in ballots that arrive after election day to be counted<\/a>, upholding the law in more than a dozen states.<\/strong> The Republican National Committee had challenged a Mississippi state law allowing mailed ballots to be counted if they arrive within five business days of election day, so long as they were postmarked by election day. The court\u2019s liberal justices pointed to federal laws that allow for grace periods, while noting that a ruling here could also implicate early voting, another common practice.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\"><strong>The court also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jun\/29\/supreme-court-denies-alan-dershowitz-appeal-bid-cnn\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">refused to revive a $300m defamation lawsuit filed against CNN<\/a><\/strong> <strong>over its coverage of a prominent attorney\u2019s remarks made while defending Trump during his 2020 impeachment.<\/strong> Alan Dershowitz said CNN aired only a portion of the comment made during his defense of the president, distorting his meaning to make him look like he\u2019d \u201clost his mind\u201d. The network said that multiple outlets had interpreted his remarks in a similar way, and Dershowitz couldn\u2019t show CNN was trying to mischaracterize what he said. The court\u2019s majority declined to take up the case in a brief, unexplained order.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\"><strong>And finally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jun\/29\/supreme-court-geofence-warrants-case-decision\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">supreme court threw out a judicial decision \u2060involving a Virginia man\u2019s challenge to a \u201cgeofence\u201d warrant <\/a>used by police<\/strong> <strong>to access cellphone location data near a crime scene leading to his conviction for armed robbery<\/strong>. The justices threw out \u2060a lower court\u2019s ruling against \u2060defendant Okello Chatrie, who \u200bhad argued he was subjected to an illegal search and that evidence in his case should be excluded.
