A transcript of the interview is expected to be released at a later date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAt the outset, I want to state very clearly: I never witnessed nor had any indication that Epstein was engaged in ongoing criminal conduct,\u201d Gates said. \u201cI never went to his island, his ranch or his Florida home. I have never victimized anyone. While he may have sought to foster a personal relationship, I was never interested in that and never reciprocated.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"0430048f-d71c-4626-9fc8-5455a8ea7189\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-47fhrn\">\n<div data-print-layout=\"hide\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-4 | 4\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-name=\"placeholder\" class=\"dcr-1kyw41h\">\n<div data-format-theme=\"5\" data-format-design=\"0\" data-format-display=\"0\" class=\"dcr-ma29me\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jun\/09\/jeffrey-epstein-assistant-lesley-groff-testifies\" class=\"dcr-1m887w9\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dcr-ut4tvs\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1h5b6rb\">\n<div class=\"dcr-169d7yv\">\u2018He was a master manipulator,\u2019 Jeffrey Epstein assistant Lesley Groff testifies<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-eurq8n\">\n<div class=\"dcr-fkf7vq\">Read more<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gates told lawmakers that he was \u201cintroduced to Epstein in 2011 through people I trusted in my professional and philanthropic work\u201d and that Epstein had \u201cclaimed he could raise billions of dollars for global health from people for whom he provided tax and estate services\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI recall being aware that Epstein had faced prior legal issues, but I did not fully understand the extent of the crimes he committed,\u201d Gates said, referring to Epstein having pleaded guilty in 2008 to state charges in Florida of solicitation of prostitution and of solicitation of prostitution with a minor. \u201cI accepted the introduction without applying the scrutiny I should have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gates said that his \u201cinteractions with Epstein began with a limited number of preliminary meetings \u2013\u00a0three in 2011 and two in 2012 \u2013\u00a0during which I talked about the goals of my work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The billionaire said that the two began \u201cmore extensive conversations in 2013 and 2014\u201d and that the discussions \u201cfocused on identifying potential giving structures, such as donor-advised funds, and how to enroll individuals he claimed were interested in making significant contributions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI made it clear to Epstein from the outset that he would never play a role in any of the work or receive any compensation,\u201d Gates said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gates said that in 2014, \u201cafter Epstein brought together a group he described as potential donors, I realized that our prior discussions \u2013 which should have translated into meaningful philanthropic support \u2013\u00a0were a dead end\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt was clear that no one in the group was interested enough to move forward,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cAt that point, I concluded Epstein would never deliver on his promises. I told him we would go no further and stopped communicating or meeting with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gates said that their interactions ended in December 2014. Gates told lawmakers that it was during the same time period that an employee of his was \u201cwas in the process of transitioning out of my private office\u201d and that the employee \u201cengaged Epstein to negotiate and advise him on the terms of the separation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHis involvement resulted in email exchanges, calls and meetings with members of my team and me,\u201d Gates said. \u201cThe agreement we ultimately reached was not any different from what was previously agreed upon months in advance of Epstein inserting himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gates told lawmakers that it was \u201cafter this that I learned Epstein had become aware of sensitive information about my personal life, including the fact that I had been unfaithful in my marriage\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>These affairs had nothing to do with my interactions with Epstein, but they were painful for my family,\u201d he said. \u201cAs the public can now see, based on what has been released in the files, Epstein was working to use information about my infidelities \u2013 in addition to many lies that he layered on top \u2013 to pressure me to re-engage with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe was unsuccessful in this effort, but it shows some of the ways he tried to leverage his interactions with me to further his agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI should never have met with Epstein in the first place. Based on what I know now, I understand that even if he had delivered the new donors he promised, it would not have justified associating with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gates said: \u201cI see now that he sought to build an image of legitimacy around himself, using connections to reputable and powerful people to deflect scrutiny and attempt to rehabilitate his reputation. I was so focused on the possibility of raising funds for global health that I allowed that goal to override my better judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The committee, chaired by James Comer, <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3.3.26-Bill-Gates-TI-Request.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">requested Gates\u2019s appearance<\/a> in March, following the justice department\u2019s release of millions of documents related to Epstein earlier this year. The files included numerous mentions of Gates, as well as several photographs of him, and records showing that he met with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/bill-gates-image-epstein-e0b83243\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Epstein on several occasions<\/a>, renewing scrutiny of Gates\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/12\/business\/jeffrey-epstein-bill-gates.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">past ties<\/a> to the disgraced financier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gates has not been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein and has repeatedly denied having any knowledge of Epstein\u2019s crimes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Just before 1pm ET on Wednesday, as Gates\u2019s interview continued, Representative Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the committee, stepped out briefly with other Democrats on the panel and provided an update.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSo far Mr Gates has been cooperative in answering our questions,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cMr Gates has discussed and provided us information about other folks that were in Mr Epstein\u2019s orbit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Representative Stephen Lynch added: \u201cWe continually press him on the point that his relationship, his multiyear relationship with Jeffrey Epstein began after Mr Epstein was already a registered sex offender and had been convicted.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"b9f3e465-58ab-4098-bc1f-593ea2f36586\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-47fhrn\">\n<div data-print-layout=\"hide\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-24 | 24\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-name=\"placeholder\" class=\"dcr-1kyw41h\">\n<div data-format-theme=\"5\" data-format-design=\"0\" data-format-display=\"0\" class=\"dcr-ma29me\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jun\/04\/pam-bondi-epstein-transcript\" class=\"dcr-1m887w9\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dcr-ut4tvs\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1h5b6rb\">\n<div class=\"dcr-169d7yv\">Pam Bondi claims Todd Blanche was \u2018in charge\u2019 of \u2018entire release\u2019 of Epstein files<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-eurq8n\">\n<div class=\"dcr-fkf7vq\">Read more<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The released records also include correspondence between Epstein and some of Gates\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/24\/technology\/jeffrey-epstein-microsoft-executives.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">former advisers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/ideas\/media-center\/press-releases\/2026\/02\/doj-statement\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">staff at the Gates Foundation<\/a>. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/ideas\/media-center\/press-releases\/2026\/02\/doj-statement\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">statement<\/a> after the files were released, the foundation said that it was aware of the emails and said that \u201con the basis of Epstein\u2019s claims that he could mobilize significant philanthropic resources for global health and development, a small number of foundation employees interacted with Epstein to try to secure this potential funding\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cUltimately, the foundation did not pursue any collaboration with Epstein and no fund was ever created,\u201d the foundation added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In April, the Gates foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/ideas\/media-center\/press-releases\/2026\/04\/external-review\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">announced<\/a> that it had commissioned an \u201cexternal review to assess past foundation engagement with Epstein, and our current policies for vetting and developing new philanthropic partnerships\u201d. The foundation said the review was ongoing and that its board and management would receive an update this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In recent years, Gates has publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/video\/series\/on-the-news\/bill-gates-i-was-quite-stupid-to-spend-time-with-epstein\/228DDB17-21D1-4370-A5D7-212B0E6F3FEE\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">expressed regret<\/a> over his past association with Epstein. In an interview last year, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/video\/series\/on-the-news\/bill-gates-i-was-quite-stupid-to-spend-time-with-epstein\/228DDB17-21D1-4370-A5D7-212B0E6F3FEE\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said<\/a> that he met with Epstein several times to discuss philanthropy, but said that he was \u201cfoolish\u201d to have spent any time with the convicted sex offender.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Earlier this year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/bill-gates-apologizes-to-foundation-staff-over-epstein-ties-67f39ef5\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported that Gates apologized to employees of the Gates foundation during a February town-hall meeting for his past ties to Epstein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gates told staff that he continued meeting with Epstein through 2014, even after his then wife, Melinda French Gates, had raised concerns.
