at the top of a rollercoaster ride that became stuck in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/texas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Texas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pictures and <a href=\"https:\/\/abc13.com\/post\/galveston-pleasure-pier-roller-coaster-stopped-rider-rescue-underway-skyeye13-shows\/19189544\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">news footage of the incident<\/a> showed a rollercoaster car stalled at the peak of a huge almost vertical drop on the Iron Shark rollercoaster overlooking the Gulf of Mexico at the Pleasure Pier in Galveston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The eight young people \u2013 all attendees of two schools in nearby Houston \u2013 spent almost four hours stranded in the car, feet dangling in mid-air in the baking hot sun as local emergency personnel sought to rescue them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Eventually, firefighters extended a huge rescue ladder up to the students and, using harnesses, extricated them from the rollercoaster car and brought them back to the ground by allowing them to climb down the ladder to safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mike Varela Jr, Galveston\u2019s fire chief, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khou.com\/article\/news\/local\/live-now-riders-stuck-on-galveston-rollercoaster\/285-e4198cc8-5a1a-460e-826e-cce9a996a516\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">told a press conference<\/a> that the students were doing well and uninjured by their ordeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOf course they were shaken up from climbing that ladder down, being in that hot sun,\u201d he said. \u201cThey have been checked for dehydration and everyone seems to be doing pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Terry Turney, chief operating officer of Pleasure Pier, said that the pause happened when the ride experienced a malfunction that triggered the emergency stop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe ride experienced a malfunction at its initial ascent, however, as designed, it immediately stopped to keep everyone safe,\u201d he said in a statement reported by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.khou.com\/article\/news\/local\/live-now-riders-stuck-on-galveston-rollercoaster\/285-e4198cc8-5a1a-460e-826e-cce9a996a516\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> local TV news station KHOU 11<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOur focus immediately shifted to the safety of our guests. Therefore, we contacted the Fire Department to assist, ensuring all guests were safely removed from the ride. A thorough inspection of the ride will take place before it is placed back in service,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Houston independent schools district said in a statement: \u201cWe are grateful that all students, staff, and chaperones are safe. School administration is in direct contact with the families of all students who were on the trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The long pier stretches out into the ocean with the rollercoaster and many other rides directly over the water.
