Folks with a college degree move to the left. That happens for a variety of reasons. Education is a pretty strong predictor of health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The second phase began during the Covid-19 pandemic, when social determinants of health, including education, could no longer explain the expanding gap in health outcomes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is a real puzzle,\u201d O\u2019Brian said. \u201cWe turn to the survey data and show that people on the right are less likely to trust, engage, or use medicines to treat chronic illness relative to the left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Past research <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2807617\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">has found that<\/a> Republicans\u2019 hesitation to vaccinate against Covid-19 has meant they suffered more death from the pandemic than Democrats. But O\u2019Brian\u2019s study showed that even different vaccination rates don\u2019t completely explain the difference in health outcomes \u2013 a lack of overall trust in the medical system is also contributing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The study relies on survey data collected in 2024 and O\u2019Brian suspects that the health gap has only continued to worsen during the second Trump administration, which began in January 2025. Jay Van Bavel, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at New York University who has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-024-03307-w\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> also studied polarization and health outcomes<\/a>, agrees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing is a continuation and expansion of a lot of the dynamics that happened during the pandemic,\u201d Van Bavel said, noting that \u201cwhen you elevate someone like RFK Jr to oversee health decisions for the country, now you\u2019re getting all of these things entrenched and embedded in national health policies around vaccination, and so you see a lot of this accelerating really quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During the pandemic, the anti-vaccination conversation <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.tamusa.edu\/cis_faculty\/14\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">revolved mostly around the newer Covid vaccines<\/a>. Now, anti-vaccination attitudes have become much broader, says Van Bavel, and have led people to resist long established vaccines for dangerous conditions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2026\/feb\/28\/anti-vaccine-rhetoric-global-measles-crisis\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">like measles<\/a>. That hesitation is now enshrined in policy as more red states are striking down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/florida-surgeon-general-says-state-will-eliminate-vaccine-mandates-rcna228835\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">vaccine mandates<\/a> and Robert F Kennedy Jr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/03\/16\/nx-s1-5749530\/judge-blocks-rfk-jr-vaccine-changes\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">attempts to do so as well.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ironically, even after he took office as one of the highest health authorities in government, Kennedy Jr has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/20\/rfk-jr-podcast-maha-health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> continued to insist<\/a> that the \u201cgovernment actually lies to us\u201d about health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere is this stream of populism that\u2019s anti-elite and anti-authority that exists in both parties, but is very strong on the right and is really part of the identity of the Trump administration. Certainly RFK Jr is part of it, and they don\u2019t seem to understand how that undercuts their own authority,\u201d Van Bavel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Van Bavel also pointed out that RFK Jr and those who follow his advice frequently perform \u201cmental gymnastics\u201d. For example, followers resist vaccines based on the idea that they don\u2019t want unknown chemicals in their body while also seeking <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthcollaborative.org\/alerts\/rfk-jr-continues-to-promote-disproven-covid-19-cures\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">unproven Covid-19<\/a> treatments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2021\/08\/25\/ivermectin-for-covid-19-abundance-of-hype-dearth-of-evidence\/?matchtype=&amp;keyword=&amp;cid=21378541377&amp;agid=&amp;device=c&amp;placement=&amp;creative=&amp;target=&amp;adposition=&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=pmax-catchall-url-ex&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=&amp;hsa_acc=5862992171&amp;hsa_cam=21378541377&amp;hsa_grp=&amp;hsa_ad=&amp;hsa_src=x&amp;hsa_tgt=&amp;hsa_kw=&amp;hsa_mt=&amp;hsa_net=adwords&amp;hsa_ver=3&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21378543084&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADjVleSXKw_no_pJtJME-VB2qDTS5&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjww8rQBhDjARIsAE43KPM7j315zXX_ya0wlR2GcpQRKCbCVuk6rYXEtdWurbV8CApOd4j61BwaAuxdEALw_wcB\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">like ivermectin.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">O\u2019Brian\u2019s research shows that conservatives are avoiding the doctor for reasons beyond vaccines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFolks on the right have more hypertension [or high blood pressure] than the folks on the Left, and now people on the Right are less likely to go to their doctor, less likely to trust their doctor, less likely to think medicines to treat hypertension are safe and effective,\u201d O\u2019Brian explained. \u201cCardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the US, and if lots of people walk around with untreated hypertension, that\u2019s really bad for the individual and for public health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Van Bavel noted that Republicans are more likely to suffer from long Covid, given that they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10664948\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">less likely to have been vaccinated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhat you\u2019re also going to see, however, is that the segment of the society that is more likely to have long Covid because they didn\u2019t get vaccinated is probably least likely to identify themselves as having long Covid or go to the doctor complaining about long Covid,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As this gap is likely to continue to grow, O\u2019Brian says it\u2019s important that medical researchers start tracking it more consistently.
