style=\"--grid-area:body\" data-gu-name=\"body\" class=\"dcr-kn9unn\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1a4fred\">\n<div id=\"maincontent\" class=\"dcr-ydnaza\">\n<div class=\"article-body-commercial-selector article-body-viewer-selector dcr-1c9t5u6\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Happy, an elephant that became embroiled in a high-profile court case over whether she had the legal rights of a person, has died after being euthanized at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/new-york\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">New York<\/a> City\u2019s Bronx zoo at the age of 55.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Asian elephant, was euthanized on Tuesday after zoo staff determined that \u201cprogressive, age-related health conditions\u201d required the decision, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs four zoos and an aquarium in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cShe died peacefully surrounded by the keepers, curators, and veterinarians who have cared for her, some for more than 30 years,\u201d said Craig Piper, interim director of the Bronx zoo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Piper said that Happy, kept at Bronx Zoo since 1977 after being named after one of the dwarves in the Snow White story, enjoyed munching on strawberries and watermelons and was friendly with visitors, lifting her trunk in greeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But Happy gained much broader attention when an animal rights group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/jun\/14\/elephant-person-human-animal-rights-happy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">launched a legal bid in 2018 to release her from the zoo<\/a>, arguing \u2013 in the first case of its kind involving an elephant \u2013 that she deserved the rights of personhood and liberty and should be moved to a sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Zoo officials opposed this, stating that Happy was well cared for and that moving her would be disruptive to her life. New York\u2019s top court ultimately agreed and rejected the activists\u2019 claim in a 5-2 ruling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, two of the New York high court judges wrote pointed dissents. One called Happy\u2019s captivity \u201cinherently unjust and inhumane\u201d and \u201can affront to a civilized society\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHappy made history,\u201d said Christopher Berry, executive director of the Nonhuman Rights Project, the animal rights group.\u201cShe was forced to endure a near lifetime of chronic stress and trauma in the zoo\u2019s tiny, barren exhibit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHappy\u2019s suffering will not be in vain. Happy will always be remembered as the elephant who opened the courtroom doors for legal rights for animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Unusually for a pachyderm, Happy has two separate claims to fame. In 2005, the elephant was part of a groundbreaking study that showed that elephants can recognize themselves in a mirror \u2013 a sign of self-awareness so far understood to be shared only with a few other non-human species, such as chimpanzees and orcas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.0608062103\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">experiment<\/a>, a mirror was placed in front of Happy and she used her trunk to repeatedly touch an X painted above her eye, a mark she could only see in the reflection in the mirror.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Happy leaves behind longtime companion Patty, a 57-year-old elephant.
