The president is seeking at least $10bn in damages, according to the amended lawsuit &#8211; the same amount he had previously sought.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAt the time of publication, Defendants recklessly disregarded whether the Defamatory Statements were true and\/or they purposefully avoided the discovery of the truth,\u201d lawyers for Trump wrote in the amended complaint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It comes as the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/may\/27\/trump-doj-investigation-e-jean-carroll\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">opened a criminal investigation<\/a> into E Jean Carroll, the writer who accused the president of sexual assault, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/27\/politics\/exclusive-justice-department-launched-e-jean-carroll-investigation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/27\/us\/politics\/us-is-said-to-open-criminal-inquiry-of-e-jean-carroll-over-accusations-against-trump.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">news reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Prosecutors, the New York Times and CNN reported on Wednesday, are looking into whether Carroll, 82, committed perjury in a 2022 deposition during her civil lawsuits against Trump, in which she said she did not accept outside financial support for her legal battles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In other developments:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Jq8MNkbr3qQ?si=Xj-0Q-xb8K8xn0YU\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a new interview with CBS News<\/a>, <strong>Jill Biden<\/strong>, the former first lady, said that she was \u201cfrightened\u201d as she watched her husband, then-president <strong>Joe Biden<\/strong>, freeze up during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/jun\/27\/biden-trump-debate-democrats-reaction\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">his disastrous 2024 debate<\/a> against <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>. Pressed to explain what happened, Jill Biden said: \u201cI don\u2019t know what happened. I mean as I watched it, I thought, \u2018Oh, my God, he\u2019s having a stroke\u2019.
