Members of Congress and their families had come for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/videos\/congressional-picnic-2026\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">annual White House picnic<\/a>. But not every member of Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Missing the fun was Thomas Massie, a longtime thorn in the US president\u2019s side. Massie was at home in Kentucky, suffering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/may\/20\/trump-thomas-massie-kentucky-maga\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a primary election defeat<\/a> that made him the latest victim of Trump\u2019s revenge tour. \u201cWe won the Massie thing,\u201d the president told guests at the picnic on Tuesday evening. \u201cHe was a bad guy. He deserves to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was the latest imperious demonstration of Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/may\/20\/trump-thomas-massie-kentucky-maga\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">enduring stranglehold on the Republican party<\/a>, and his determination to purify it of dissenters. But at what price? The president also faces opinion polls suggesting that, while his support base remains as fervent as ever, it is losing touch with the middle ground where November\u2019s midterm elections will be won and lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/charliesykes.substack.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Charlie Sykes<\/a>, a conservative author and broadcaster, said: \u201cHe\u2019s tightening his grip on his party, for better or for worse. The problem is that most of his victories are coming at the expense of the Republican party rather than the Democrats at this point<em>, <\/em>which ought to be something of a warning sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">No slight is too small for Trump to wage a vendetta. During his first term, he ousted \u2013 or made life intolerable for \u2013 Republicans including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/aug\/16\/wyoming-republican-primary-liz-cheney-donald-trump-harriet-hageman\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Liz Cheney<\/a>, Adam Kinzinger, Justin Amash, Bob Corker, Jeff Flake and Will Hurd. His second term is proving equally unforgiving to those deemed to have failed his loyalty tests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In Indiana, five state senators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/may\/05\/indiana-republicans-donald-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">lost their seats after resisting Trump\u2019s demands<\/a> regarding the redrawing of congressional maps. In Louisiana, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/may\/17\/republican-louisiana-senator-bill-cassidy-results-primary-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">US senator Bill Cassidy<\/a> lost his primary last weekend after voting to convict Trump in 2021, during the second impeachment trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In Kentucky, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/may\/19\/kentucky-republican-primary-trump-massie\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Massie lost<\/a> the most expensive congressional primary in history against Trump\u2019s handpicked challenger, former Navy Seal Ed Gallrein, after challenging the president on government spending, war powers and files on the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ive-got-seven-months-left\" class=\"dcr-12ibh7f\">\u2018I\u2019ve got seven months left\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarasetmayer.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Tara Setmayer<\/a>, co-founder and chief executive of the Seneca Project, a women-led political action committee, said: \u201cThe fact that Donald Trump and his acolytes poured a record amount of money into the primary to take him out because he wasn\u2019t sufficiently loyal enough to cover for Donald Trump on the Epstein issue tells you everything you need to know about the current state of the Republican party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAmerica is watching. The world is watching and people will not forget who protected predators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Massie, however, was defiant in defeat. In his concession speech, he implied that he would push back even harder against Trump during his remaining time in office,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/live\/2026\/may\/19\/donald-trump-primaries-midterms-republicans-kentucky-thomas-massie-pennsylvania-georgia-alabama-oregon-idaho-latest-news-updates\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> saying of the Epstein Files Transparency Act<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019ve taken out two dozen CEOs, an ambassador, a prince, a prime minister, a minister of culture \u2013 and that was just six months. I\u2019ve got seven months left in Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Cassidy, also, could become a thorn in Trump\u2019s side for the rest of the year on Capitol Hill. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a one-time Trump ally who clashed with him over the Epstein files and quit Congress, is using her public platform to accuse the president of betraying his \u201cAmerica first\u201d principles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Yet still Trump is thirsty for vengeance. He has threatened to target Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky and the Colorado representative Lauren Boebert because of their support for Massie, <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116586609402311469\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">branding Boebert<\/a> \u201cweak-minded\u201d and \u201cvery difficult\u201d. He also lashed out at the representative Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania for voting \u201cagainst me all the time\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"youre-gonna-need-their-votes\" class=\"dcr-12ibh7f\">\u2018You\u2019re gonna need their votes\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Setmayer, a former Republican communications director on Capitol Hill, observed: \u201cThe irony of the circular firing squad now happening within Maga and the Maga offshoots is totally predictable, because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a> cannot continue to demand blind loyalty from people who believed him and his promises, and then he betrays them and expects them to continue to kiss the ring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t work like that. And so he is now beginning to reap the consequences of betraying so many leaders in his base. They see the writing on the wall. He is already facing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/may\/21\/senate-republicans-to-ditch-trump-ballroom-funding\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">rare rebuke from Republicans<\/a> over his lavish White House ballroom project and a controversial $1.8bn compensation fund for allies claiming to be victims of \u201cpolitical weaponisation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kurtbardella\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Kurt Bardella<\/a>, a former Republican congressional aide turned Democrat, predicts that Trump may come to regret burning his bridges with Massie and Cassidy, both of whom have voted with him on the vast majority of issues. \u201cThey\u2019re still in office, and if you\u2019re going to want to do anything for the rest of the calendar year, you\u2019re gonna need their votes and you\u2019ve just torched them,\u201d Bardella said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cDonald Trump may have won the battle, but I\u2019m not sure he\u2019s going to end up winning the war because these very men who have now every reason to stick it to him have the power to stop his agenda for the rest of the year and face no consequences because there\u2019s no election hanging over their head any more. In that way, Donald Trump has empowered them and liberated them to vote their conscience.<em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump faces a further, deeper problem in November\u2019s midterm elections. While his crushing of internal dissent has proved he retains intense support within the party, his national approval rating has plunged to a record low of 37%, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/18\/us\/politics\/poll-trump-republicans-midterms-iran.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">New York Times newspaper\/Siena poll<\/a>, while Republicans trail Democrats 39% to 50% on the generic congressional ballot.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-catch-22-for-republicans\" class=\"dcr-12ibh7f\">\u2018A catch-22 for Republicans\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhh.umn.edu\/directory\/larry-jacobs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Larry Jacobs<\/a>, director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, said: \u201cTrump is as powerful as ever among the Maga sect within the Republican party, but that\u2019s not going to help him come November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cTrump\u2019s influence and power in marshalling the Maga voters may well disadvantage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/republicans\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Republicans<\/a> in districts that are going to be competitive in a midterm election that is so clearly going to [be] hostile to Republicans and the president. Independent voters have been tremendously alienated and opposed to Trump and his policies and their effects and, even among Republicans, there are some troubling signs.<em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Republicans are caught in a trap of their own making: Trump is their superpower in a primary, but could be their kryptonite in a general election. Sykes, author of How the Right Lost Its Mind, said: \u201cHe\u2019s sending the message that if you cross him he will destroy you, at the very moment when Republicans, in order to survive the midterms, do need to distance themselves from Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf you\u2019re a Republican, you not only can\u2019t do the right thing, you can\u2019t do the smart thing. You\u2019re facing these massive headwinds, these crashing polls, a surge in the cost of living, and Trump is demanding absolute loyalty and has made it clear that if you try to move away from him, your political career as a Republican is over. It is very much a catch-22 for Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sykes pointed to the example of Trump\u2019s decision this week to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/may\/19\/trump-endorses-republican-ken-paxton-senate\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">endorse the Texas state attorney general, Ken Paxton<\/a>, who has been both impeached and indicted during a chequered career, in next week\u2019s primary runoff against John Cornyn, the incumbent US senator widely seen as a safer bet against the rising Democratic star James Talarico in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked how Republicans would react to the decision, Trump told reporters: \u201cThey\u2019ll be all right with it. They want to win. I know how to win. Some of them don\u2019t know how to win. I know how to win. I think I\u2019ve proven that, haven\u2019t I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In truth, Republicans are mortified. Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/texas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Texas<\/a> is a hugely expensive state in which to run a campaign, the cost of defending a Paxton candidacy would siphon money away from battleground states such as North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Even if Paxton holds on, it would be a pyrrhic victory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s extraordinary. This is a guy who is absolutely scandal-infested,\u201d Sykes said, of Paxton. \u201cArguably one of the most corrupt politicians in America, and Donald Trump just endorsed him to defeat a leading Republican incumbent senator. It means that obviously he\u2019s prioritising personal loyalty over the Republican party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe\u2019s never cared about the Republican party.
