Next month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/10\/arc-de-trump-renderings\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">proposed design<\/a> is set to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncpc.gov\/docs\/Tentative_Agendas\/TentativeAgenda_June2026.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">reviewed<\/a> by the National Capital Planning Commission, another federal panel that oversees planning for federal buildings and land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWashington is not a static city,\u201d the panel\u2019s chair, Rodney Mims Cook Jr, said on Thursday, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/21\/us\/politics\/trump-arch-approved.html?campaign_id=60&amp;emc=edit_na_20260521&amp;instance_id=175966&amp;nl=breaking-news&amp;regi_id=271051174&amp;segment_id=220217&amp;user_id=b7a38c84cda1186528e3282eac3858d4\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">New York Times<\/a>. \u201cIt must grow to allow the next 250 years of Americans to celebrate their accomplishments.\u201d He also described the building as \u201cbeautiful\u201d according to reports.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"ffe34a15-4113-4ddc-b461-2ebd232fe057\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-47fhrn\">\n<div data-print-layout=\"hide\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-3 | 3\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-name=\"placeholder\" class=\"dcr-1kyw41h\">\n<div data-format-theme=\"5\" data-format-design=\"0\" data-format-display=\"0\" class=\"dcr-1bg5532\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/may\/21\/senate-republicans-to-ditch-trump-ballroom-funding\" class=\"dcr-1m887w9\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dcr-ut4tvs\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1h5b6rb\">\n<div class=\"dcr-169d7yv\">US Senate refuses to push through ICE funding amid row over Trump\u2019s ballroom<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-eurq8n\">\n<div class=\"dcr-fkf7vq\">Read more<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The arch, dubbed the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/15\/trump-arch-ballroom-dc-whitehouse\/86717480007\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Arc de Trump<\/a>\u201d, is designed to stand 250ft tall, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/design-plan-for-trumps-proposed-washington-arch-is-approved-by-trump-appointed-commission\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">includes a public<\/a> viewing deck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/10\/arc-de-trump-renderings\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">has said<\/a> it believes the monument will be \u201cone of the most iconic landmarks not only in Washington DC, but throughout the world\u201d. It has also said that positioning of the arch near Arlington National Cemetery would serve as \u201ca visual reminder of the noble sacrifices borne by so many American heroes throughout our 250-year history so we can enjoy our freedoms today\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But earlier this year, a group of military veterans and historic preservationists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/02\/19\/trump-arch-250-lawsuit\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">sued to stop<\/a> construction of the arch, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/02\/19\/trump-arch-250-lawsuit\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">arguing that the structure<\/a> had not received congressional approval and would disrupt the experience of visiting Arlington National Cemetery and obstruct \u201cthe symbolic and inspiring view\u201d from the cemetery to the Lincoln Memorial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In April, a White House official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/10\/arc-de-trump-renderings\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">told the Guardian<\/a> that the arch\u2019s estimated cost was \u201cstill being calculated\u201d and would be released in the near future. The official said that the White House expects that the project will be funded through \u201csome combination of public and private funds\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/21\/us\/politics\/trump-arch-approved.html?campaign_id=60&amp;emc=edit_na_20260521&amp;instance_id=175966&amp;nl=breaking-news&amp;regi_id=271051174&amp;segment_id=220217&amp;user_id=b7a38c84cda1186528e3282eac3858d4\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">New York Times<\/a>, the Trump administration has argued in legal filings that it has the authority to build the arch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The arch is one of several high-profile projects that Trump is pursuing in Washington during his second term.
