Why does it feel like a troll?<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"--grid-area:standfirst\" data-gu-name=\"standfirst\" class=\"dcr-1fnjjtg\">\n<div class=\"dcr-cj4vxp\">\n<p>A New York exhibit of more than 3,000 volumes bills itself as \u2018an exercise in radical transparency\u2019 \u2013 and a bid for attention<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"--grid-area:body\" data-gu-name=\"body\" class=\"dcr-kn9unn\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1a4fred\">\n<div id=\"maincontent\" class=\"dcr-ydnaza\">\n<div class=\"article-body-commercial-selector article-body-viewer-selector dcr-1c9t5u6\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><span style=\"color:var(--drop-cap);font-weight:500\" class=\"dcr-15rw6c2\">T<\/span>his February, a story broke that seemed like it might finally be <em>the one<\/em>. Reporters at NPR had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/02\/24\/nx-s1-5723968\/epstein-files-trump-accusation-maxwell\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">noticed<\/a> that there were pages missing from the enormous tranche of Epstein files released by the Department of Justice. Further reporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/feb\/26\/trump-epstein-files-fbi\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">revealed<\/a> that the files in question were 2019 FBI interviews with a woman who claimed to have been sexually abused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/jeffrey-epstein\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Donald Trump<\/a> when she was a minor. The justice department had no good explanation for why the documents had been withheld. Trump issued blanket denials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was all starting to feel like a good old-fashioned something-gate, the kind of scandal that might even bring down a presidency. But then, as with so many other stories in the era of Trump, its spark was subsumed by a new fire. On 28 February, Trump launched an unprovoked and likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/mar\/04\/trump-administration-illegal-war-iran-experts\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">illegal<\/a> war against Iran, and the Epstein files were once again pushed off the front pages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/trumpsonian.us\/rr\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Donald J Trump and Jeffrey Epstein Memorial Reading Room<\/a> is an attempt to stem the dreadful tide of ephemerality that is our Trump-addled news cycle. A project from the not-for-profit group <a href=\"https:\/\/primary-facts.org\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the Institute for Primary Facts<\/a>, the pop-up exhibit has transformed a storefront gallery in New York\u2019s Tribeca neighborhood into an IRL library of the Epstein files. Which is to say, the group took the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/epstein\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">digital files<\/a> released thus far by the government, printed them all out in the order they were released, and bound them into 3,437 volumes. The two rooms of the gallery are lined with bookshelves floor to ceiling, and the overall effect is one of overwhelm. This is what 3.5m pages of investigative files actually look like \u2013 and it\u2019s a lot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf you are doomscrolling on your phone, you see a cat video, and an ICE raid video, and your aunt\u2019s birthday cake, and evidence of one of the most horrific crimes in American history \u2013 it\u2019s all just together on your phone. (The Institute for Primary Facts is raising money to mount the exhibit in other cities.) It also features a timeline of allegations of sexual misconduct against Trump and Epstein, as well as of their relationship with each other, which the US president has long tried to downplay. Notecards are provided for visitors to record their reflections. In the center of the main room, 1,400 artificial candles are displayed behind semi-sheer curtains, a tribute toEpstein\u2019s victims. (The justice department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/26392531-read-the-letter-deputy-attorney-general-todd-blanche-sent-to-congress-about-the-epstein-files-release\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">told Congress<\/a> in December that it had redacted the names of 1,200 people in the files \u201cidentified as victims or their relatives\u201d; Garrett said the group chose 1,400 to account for victims who may not have come forward yet.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen you look at that and each one of those is a life, you\u2019re like, \u2018How is it that he wasn\u2019t stopped after 10 or 20 or 200 or 500 or 1,000?\u2019\u2019\u201d Garrett said of the candles. \u201cIt means something when you see that \u2013 that\u2019s hard to get on your phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As an exercise in demonstrating the scale of two large numbers \u2013 3.5m files, 1,400 candles \u2013 the project certainly succeeds. Standing in the gallery, I appreciated in a visceral sense the sheer weight of the evidence \u2013 the 5lb volumes come off the shelves with a bit of an <em>oomph<\/em> \u2013 and the vast number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/24\/virginia-giuffre-survivor-jeffrey-epstein-abuse\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">women and girls whose lives Epstein upended<\/a>. One of those women, Virginia Giuffre, took her own life last April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But I\u2019m less certain that the project has anything much to say about the particular horror of the Epstein case: the devastatingly individual tales of vulnerability and abuse that were brought to life by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/jul\/25\/meet-julie-k-brown-the-woman-who-brought-down-jeffrey-epstein\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">journalist Julie K Brown<\/a> have been smoothed over to produce what is, essentially, a troll of Trump. We know that Epstein cultivated relationships with intellectual, financial and political elites across the ideological spectrum; the project\u2019s clickbaity focus on the president undermines a more holistic (and accurate) understanding of the networks of money and power that allowed Epstein to prey on women and girls with impunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The reading room looks like a library, but it has none of the utility of one, which is a shame. The Epstein files were released by the justice department with all the care of an ex emptying out a box of belongings on the sidewalk in a rainstorm. Rather than bringing sense and structure to the document dump, the reading room reproduces it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe fact that the files are bound especially seems foolish,\u201d said Emma Best, an investigative journalist who spoke to the Guardian by Signal chat. It\u2019s tempting to imagine what the \u201clow six-figures\u201d cost of the reading room could have accomplished if it had been applied toward, say, a small team of librarians and archivists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSix figures would pay for a lot of research which could be used to identify people in the files and contextualize their presence,\u201d said Best. \u201cThat much money would fund DDoSecrets for a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"cde4a513-6bff-4b8d-8701-ff596b04f959\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-47fhrn\">\n<div data-print-layout=\"hide\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-16 | 16\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-name=\"placeholder\" class=\"dcr-1kyw41h\">\n<div data-format-theme=\"5\" data-format-design=\"0\" data-format-display=\"0\" class=\"dcr-1bg5532\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/23\/serial-killer-experience-exhibit\" class=\"dcr-1m887w9\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dcr-ut4tvs\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1h5b6rb\">\n<div class=\"dcr-169d7yv\">This serial killer exhibit made me want to hurl &#8211; has our true crime obsession gone too far?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-eurq8n\">\n<div class=\"dcr-fkf7vq\">Read more<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Absent utility, what\u2019s left is largely aesthetic: it bears the distinct whiff of the Museum of Ice Cream and other so-called \u201cexperiums\u201d that are transparently designed to serve as a striking backdrop for Instagram posts. Indeed, Garrett said that the mostly anonymous team behind the project included late-night TV writers, people involved with the March for Our Lives and the Women\u2019s March, and \u201cpeople that had put together immersive experiences for Disney\u201d. I don\u2019t know that we need a Museum of Billionaire Sexual Exploitation, but if we get one, I would hope it has more to say about violence against women and elite impunity than this vaguely funereal bed of candles, its battery-powered lights flickering uncannily in sync.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Garrett said that he was inspired to found the Institute for Primary Facts when the Smithsonian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/01\/smithsonian-trump-impeachments\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">removed references to Trump\u2019s two impeachments<\/a> from a display at the National Museum of American History last year. \u201cI got pissed off,\u201d he said. \u201cI texted everyone I knew, like, \u2018I\u2019m gonna raise money and I\u2019m gonna do a thing.\u2019\u201d The website and public filings of the Institute for Primary Facts reveal little information about the group or its funders, but Garrett, a wine entrepreneur and self-described \u201clean startup guy\u201d, said that he \u201cwrote the first check\u201d. The board is made up of Garrett, Democratic strategist Jenna Lowenstein and Mary Corcoran, co-founder of an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/08\/anti-trump-former-republicans-have-a-multimillion-dollar-plan-to-save-house-democrats-00680114\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">anti-Trump former Republican<\/a>\u201d Pac that plans to spend $100m opposing the Maga movement in the midterms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">What unites the people involved is \u201cconcern with what we consider to be the erosion of democracy in the United States\u201d, Garrett said. \u201cIt could be that Donald Trump has never done anything wrong in his life, but just the mere fact that he\u2019s interfering in and impeding the investigation \u2026 that\u2019s the kind of corruption that can ruin a democracy.\u201d (Trump\u2019s second term has featured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/20\/us\/politics\/trump-justice-department-us-attorneys.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">shocking levels of interference<\/a> in the justice department and FBI, which are supposed to operate independently from the president. Even as Trump has ordered investigations and prosecutions of his political foes, the justice department has failed to release <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/19\/politics\/epstein-files-next-steps-congress-victims-law\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">another 2.5m pages<\/a> of Epstein investigation documents, as required by the Epstein Files Transparency Act.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Garrett also stressed that the project was not aligned with any campaign or political party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a> was enacting policies that he believed in and following the rule of law, I wouldn\u2019t be here, probably,\u201d he said. \u201cI was mad at Bush too, but I didn\u2019t do this. I think [Trump is] breaking the law. I think he\u2019s corrupting our democracy. I think I owe my kids a functioning democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It all felt very unsatisfying. Clearly some people believe that keeping Trump\u2019s association with Epstein in the spotlight is the key to Democrats winning the House in the midterm elections, thereby staving off the country\u2019s slide into fascist authoritarianism. I don\u2019t know if they\u2019re correct, but I can\u2019t say I disagree with their aims, uncomfortable as I may be with the way in which this particular project instrumentalizes documentation of horrific abuse in a bid for media coverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFor me, the purpose of this is attention,\u201d Garrett told me as our interview came to an end. My presence was indicative of the fact that he had achieved his purpose. The stunt was generating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/13\/style\/epstein-files-exhibition-trump-tribeca.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">desired<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/a-library-dedicated-solely-to-the-epstein-files-is-opening-in-new-york\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">headlines<\/a>. And Garrett had to run: George Conway, the erstwhile Republican and ex-husband of Trump aide Kellyanne Conway, had arrived with a clutch of supporters for his congressional campaign.
